Global Education and Critical Media Literacy

“ When we reject the single story, when we realize that there is never a single story about any place, we regain a king of paradise ” - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

“Global Education” means to have a wider perspective on everything that happens around us. It is a “creative approach of bringing about change in our society” (GLEN). It is a multidisciplinary subject - or rather an approach to learning - based on universal values of tolerance, solidarity, equality, justice and non violence.

About the course

This course is based on raising awareness about global challenges, such as the root causes of poverty, the uneven distribution of resources, violent conflicts, the manipulation of information and environmental degradation; and motivates people to become active, responsible global citizens. Its methodological approaches are naturally learner-centred, participatory and experience based.

The course will also have a strong component based on the analysis and comparison of different media sources and advertisement from around the world - deconstructing the messages in their basic components and understanding the agenda and the values that inspire them. In the constructive part, learners will try to build positive counter-narratives able to effectively contrast them.

Objectives of the course

  • to learn about the basic principles and concepts of Global Education;
  • to raise awareness about some of the main global challenges of today;
  • to gain a critical perspective about history and geopolitics from a global perspective;
  • to develop tools to analyze and deconstruct media products and narratives and construct positive alternatives;
  • to learn how to critically approach news and media, build defenses against “fake news” and propaganda, and effectively contrast them;
  • to learn how values are embedded in society, how they change dynamically (according to S. Schwartz’s “Circumplex” (2012), and how can organizations and individuals improve the effectiveness of their communication and campaigns.
